An overview of this recurrent, obstinate inflammatory skin condition called as psoriasis and its treatment in homeopathy. A detailed note on how to get an online consultation for psoriasis.

What happens in psoriasis?

In psoriasis, we notice chronic inflammation of the skin. Psoriasis is not uncommon as it affects around two to three percent of the world population. Psoriasis is clubbed under the list of autoimmune diseases, where the immune system is believed to become overactive, in turn, attacks its own cells and tissues.

Normally new skin cells are formed at the bottom of the outer layer of our skin. The cell cycle starts at the bottom and each cell goes through a life cycle moving upwards through the layers of the skin. The cells go to the surface of the skin and after completing the cycle they die. The cell cycle completes in about three to four weeks. In people suffering from psoriasis, this cell cycle is completed within three to four days due to hyperactivity. This leads to thickening and scaly appearance of the skin. Psoriasis may affect skin all over the body and scalp as well as nails. In about six percent of total psoriasis cases, skin complaints are accompanied by inflammation of joints, affecting mainly fingers, toes and the spine and is called psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis picture may differ from person to person.

Although the basic features of inflammation and scaling remain the same, psoriasis may appear in different forms. When it appears as big patches of thickened skin with white/silvery scales all over the body and elbows and knees, in particular, it is termed as plaque psoriasis. When skin is affected, especially in children after some streptococcal infection,  with lots of small scaly spots and patches the condition is termed as psoriasis guttate. When psoriasis presents as little yellow pustules especially on palms and soles it may be termed as psoriasis pustulosa.

In half of all cases of psoriasis, nails may be affected in varying degrees. From small indentures in the nails to circular discolorations under the nails, to thickening and separation from the underlying nail bed, nails affection can be seen in any of the above forms.

What causes psoriasis?

The exact cause to get psoriasis is unknown however immunity and heredity factors play important role in causing and development of psoriasis. Most of the times some trigger factors are required for psoriasis to flare. The skin cells in people affected by psoriasis grow at an abnormally fast rate, which causes the accumulation of psoriasis eruptions. Certain trigger factors which may lead to psoriasis are streptococcal throat infections, use of certain medicines, injury to the skin, emotional factors like stress or situations of trauma, shock, and bereavement. Due to the nature of this disease and its appearance, psoriasis can affect an individual emotionally as people unfamiliar with the condition might think it is contagious.

Conventional and homeopathy treatment for psoriasis.

Whatever may be the mode of treatment, psoriasis is treated by addressing the immune system of the sufferer. In conventional mode, treatment is targeted towards suppressing the immunity so that body will not show the autoimmunity on the surface. This may produce immediate results but it is not long lasting as once the medicines are stopped symptoms reappear. In homeopathy mode, treatment is targeted towards correcting the autoimmunity with the medicines which have potential to break the tendencies. Once the autoimmunity is corrected rather than suppressing there are fewer chances of recurrence.

Conventional treatment consists of topical/local and oral medication. Topical medicines vary from simple emollients to moisturize the skin and relieve itching, to salicylic acid based creams, topical steroid creams of varying strength and tar preparations. In severe cases, oral medication can be used, often in addition to topical treatment. However, they can have side effects. Also, most oral treatments are contraindicated during pregnancy.

Homeopathic treatment

We come across lots of psoriasis patients, most of them had already tried one or more forms of conventional treatment. Most of the people share a common experience that those treatments were helpful and often cleared the skin eruptions but temporarily. At some stage or the other after stopping the medicines psoriasis returned with more flare and this time it was not responding to the same treatment.  For this reason, people start looking for a more permanent cure for psoriasis.

From the homeopathic point, a case of psoriasis can be approached in different ways. The constitutional approach towards a case of psoriasis usually gives long-lasting results. Here the person suffering from psoriasis is evaluated based on his tendencies, emotional sphere, past, and family history as well as current symptoms. The constitutional approach aims at strengthening the organism generally. This means along with patient’s psoriasis symptoms his or her general health and way of reacting to the environment is also considered.

Another approach is to treat symptomatically, that means treating the psoriasis symptoms only for giving quick relief from symptoms of itching and scaling. We usually aim for the constitutional approach but sometimes combine the two approaches, giving a more symptomatic skin remedy for flare-ups, while treating the person as a whole with a constitutional remedy.

Remember there is no shortcut to treat autoimmune diseases like psoriasis. Overall in a majority of cases, we find excellent results in patients who opt for homeopathic treatment. In few stubborn cases, we have seen that their general health has improved but not the appearance of their psoriasis. Although Itch or soreness has reduced which has improved their quality of life.

Choosing homeopathic medicine in each case of psoriasis is a challenge.

There is no rule that if a selected medicine has given us a favorable result in the certain case then it will show results in another case. Every individual is different and may require a different medicine. In every case, our protocol is to get many details. In choosing which homeopathic remedy to use, we consider various factors. It is always important if we can get to know the trigger factor which initiated psoriasis. If psoriasis has been triggered by emotional factors, for example, some grief then set of medicines changes. This is not enough as every person may react to grief in different ways. It is also important to know the reaction of that particular patient. Based on the reactions and presenting complaints we ****yze the case and select the most similar medicine.

The location, intensity, and severity of the patches can be useful for the choice of medicine. Type of psoriasis, factors that aggravate or relieve the condition forms the guiding symptom for a set of medicine to select.
